DID YOU KNOW...

Did you know what is... oncological cosmetics?

Oncological cosmetics are those designed to prevent, alleviate and repair the side effects of chemotherapy or radiotherapy on the skin.

These side effects (or adverse effects) may occur following cancer treatment, and may include one or more of the following: skin conditions:

  • dermatitis
  • dry skin
  • inflammation
  • redness
  • itching

It is common for cancer patients who have undergone chemotherapy – and, to a lesser extent, radiotherapy – to experience these skin problems on a recurring basis.

For that reason, the cosmetics industry has created specific product ranges aimed at cancer patients, tailored to the specific needs of this group.

However, oncology cosmetics also include other product ranges, such as the make-up for cancer patients.

October: Breast Cancer Awareness Month

The American Cancer Society, in collaboration with Imperial Chemical Industries, organised a week-long breast cancer awareness campaign in October 1985. This campaign also culminated in the celebration on 13 October of the World Metastatic Breast Cancer Day.

The initiative was so successful that, in the following year, many other countries joined both the wider breast cancer campaign and the awareness day for metastatic breast cancer. And thanks to the magazine’s coverage Estée Lauder, a new global symbol for the fight against cancer was introduced: the pink scarf.

Later on, the World Health Organisation (WHO) added another date to the calendar, that of the World Breast Cancer Day. This new event, which takes place on 19 October, aims to raise awareness amongst people worldwide of the importance of prevention and early diagnosis of this disease, which affects millions of women and men across the globe.

We cannot stress this enough: when it comes to breast cancer, it is essential to attend the screening appointments that will be arranged for you by your local public health centre. And if you notice any unusual lumps in your breast, consult your doctor as soon as possible. Early detection will always be of great benefit to the patient, particularly in terms of preventing future metastases.
