RAPEX REPORT SEPTEMBER 2017– Last September, the EU’s Rapid Alert System for Consumers published five alerts from the European Commission. As a result of these alerts, as many as 178 products were withdrawn from the single market, eight of them in Spain.
Rapex Report, September 2017: What happened in the cosmetics sector?
The European Rapid Alert System for consumers in the EU has withdrawn a total of three cosmetic products from the market. This is a low figure, particularly when you consider that there were five alerts in September. Here you will find all the information on the cosmetics banned in September:
In the first alert, dated 1 September 2017, the Rapid Alert System, acting through the French authorities, withdrew a facial cream originating from Morocco. The product contained nickel and barium among its ingredients, two substances that sometimes appear in cosmetics as impurities.
In the second alert, the Italian authorities recalled a children’s make-up set from China. Some of the cosmetics in the set contained nickel, arsenic, chromium and lead, meaning the product did not comply with the Regulation. This is a particularly serious alert, as the product is intended for children.
In the third week of September, there were no bans in Spain or in the cosmetics sector. The only significant product recalls in the pharmaceutical sector were issued by the Bulgarian authorities; these involved some dummies and dummy chains.
The fourth Rapex alert in September led to the recall of a tattoo ink that did not comply with Resolution ResAP (2008)1, which concerns the safety of tattoo products. The reason? It contained o-anisidine amine, a carcinogenic ingredient. However, there were no bans in the cosmetics sector.
The latest alert from the European Rapid Alert System was published on Friday 29 September. In it, some effervescent bath bombs, shaped like a cake, were recalled. As such, they could be mistaken for food. The French authorities also banned a paint stripping gel because it did not carry the necessary safety warnings on the label.
