We\u2019re starting a new year, and it\u2019s time to present the Rapex Annual Report 2016<\/strong>, a report on our weekly monitoring of alerts from the European Commission Early Warning System<\/strong>. We hope to publish a more detailed article in due course, containing a wealth of relevant information on how these alerts affect the cosmetics sector.<\/p>\n

For now, we can already draw some important conclusions. Throughout 2016, the European Commission Early Warning System<\/strong> The consumer unit issued 51 alerts. As a result, a total of 1,905 products were withdrawn from the European market. Of these, 199 were withdrawn at the request of the Spanish authorities.<\/p>\n

Rapex alerts in the cosmetics sector<\/h3>\n

One of the product categories that is particularly worth keeping an eye on is cosmetics<\/strong>. Throughout 2016, the EU has notified the withdrawal of 87 items from the cosmetics sector<\/strong>. However, according to the weekly monitoring carried out by GTF, this figure could be slightly higher, reaching 105. Many of the cosmetic products recalled by Rapex fall into other categories, such as children\u2019s make-up sets or children\u2019s finger paints. These items usually fall within the toys category.<\/p>\n

About tattoo inks<\/h3>\n

Whilst Spanish regulations are still more restrictive than those in the EU \u2013 at present, there is no long-lasting tattoo ink that is legal at national level \u2013 the European Commission regularly reports the withdrawal of certain tattoo inks in its Rapex alerts. This year, there have been 14 bans on this type of product.<\/p>\n
